Joan B. Garner
November 01, 1941 ‐ August 30, 2022

Joan Garner, 80, of Bay Village, OH, formerly of Landisville, PA, passed away on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, after fighting long battles with ovarian cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Helen Boose, the sister of late Nancy Fasolt, and the wife of Bruce Garner, who preceded her in death in 2006.
Joan was a proud graduate of Hempfield High School, and she taught at Landisville Elementary School for many years. After getting a master’s degree in Computer Education from Johns Hopkins University, she became an early advocate for innovative ways to use computers to advance elementary education. Joan was an active member of Wayside Presbyterian Church before moving to Ohio in 2016. She loved making hooked wool rugs, hiking for wildflowers, attending book and investment clubs with her teacher friends, and traveling.
Joan is survived by two sons, Andrew (Sharon) of Bay Village, OH and Tim of Novato, CA, and three grandchildren: Timothy (Jordan) of Norwood, OH, Deborah of Boston, MA, and JB of Novato, CA. Memorial services to celebrate Joan’s life will occur in both the Cleveland and Lancaster areas at future dates. When available, details about those events will be posted here. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made either to Joan’s Tribute Page at the Joan Garner Alzheimer Tribute Page or to the Hospice of the Western Reserve

Joan was one of the good ones in education and I feel fortunate to have worked with her. She touched the lives of many children and then left the classroom to help her colleagues become computer literate. She did it with grace and a lot of patience.

My whole family new Joan very well, I also was a very good friend to her mother. I really didn't know that she had moved out of the house on the Butzer farm in the Silver Springs area. We all new her a long time. I worked at Hempfield School District at the Rohrerstown School. She became our computer lady to help us fix up our computers.
She was a great person & sympathy to the whole family.
Sincerely, Charlene Butzer

Joan and I graduated from Milllersville State College in May 1962. Years later I taught fourth grade with her at Landisville Intermediate Center. We shared many interests, some of them dealing with our sons named Tim, both of whom graduated from Hempfield High School in 1987.
Joan and I enjoyed planning our class projects at Landisville, and she was so cheerful and easy to work with. She definitely added some technical expertise to our elementary school program. She is missed by many teacher friends.

I'm sad to see the passing of Joan. I taught at mountville Elementary and I remember her as a big help with the new computers we had in school at that time. She was a sweet and patient woman. My sympathies to your families. Joan had a big influence in the Hempfield school district.

Joan was a wonderful person and a great traveling partner
She and I spent much time on the phone after her move to Ohio discussing life, politics, world events and were able to vent our feelings on any subject
I will and do miss her

Dear Andy and Tim,
My very deepest sympathy to you both and your families. Your mother was truly a gem to teach with and I am happy to say became a great friend over the years. We shared so many experiences, stories and fun times together in and out of the classroom. I will never forget our night out with Bruce and Don to hear Paul Anka. We had so much fun. Our many talks about you both centered around band, church and catechize, Cape May, and our separate trips (a week apart) to the Bahamas in search of shells for our ocean studies; not to mention our students and lessons. "The boys" were always at the heart of our conversations and she was so proud of who you became and what you have accomplished. Never doubt for a minute she touched many lives!
