The Reverend Sherman A. Bishop, of Cleveland, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 11, 2022, surrounded by his family. Beloved husband for 38 years of Deb Yandala, dear father of Matthew (Jen Engquist), Nathan, and Emily, cherished son of Ruth, and loving brother of Michael (Janelle), Diane, Kevin (Janice), and Bill (Kathleen). Born in Montana, and raised in North Dakota, he was a graduate of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota, and Luther Seminary.

Sherman was ordained as a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1981. He served as pastor of Holy Savior Lutheran Church in Detroit, Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Dayton, as an assistant to the Bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod, as senior pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Westlake, and as interim pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermilion. He prioritized ecumenical work in the communities he served and held a deep commitment to justice and anti-racism.

He was an avid reader, a devoted Cleveland baseball fan, and world traveler who found adventure around every corner. Sherman enjoyed hiking and biking with his family, and leading canoe trips with youth and adults from the churches he served. He was also passionate about music, and especially loved singing in the Baldwin Wallace Men’s Chorus and cherished his time with this fine community of musicians.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 22, at 2:00pm at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Westlake, Ohio, with The Rev. Dr. Bishop Laura Barbins, Bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod, The Rev. Marissa Harrison, and The Rev. Charlie Woodward officiating. It will be live-streamed at www.princeofpeacewestlake.org.

The family will greet friends from 4:00 - 7:00pm on Wednesday April 20 at Prince of Peace.

Memorial contributions can be made to Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry, the Baldwin Wallace Men’s Chorus, or Good Soil Lutheran Ministries.

Dear Deb and family, Beth and I met Sherm at Holden Village in 1980, and I got reconnected with him 16 months ago over the funeral of a colleague of his. The joy of Jesus that he spread to others is so evident; and so is the need for Easter promise and Easter Joy this year. Peace to you all, as you celebrate his life and mourn his death.

I so enjoyed Sherman's friendship, whether in conversation, social gatherings or events we shared (baseball games at Progressive Field were an annual event!). He was so well read and able to speak on so many subjects. I will forever treasure his warmth and generosity. He was a man of Christian faith and conviction who will always hold a special place in my life.
