Johann (John) Hoffmann, of Westlake, Ohio, passed away on March 31, 2022 at the age of 86. He was born in Yugoslavia on April 25,1935, and was the son of the late Josef and Agnes (nee Palanjok) Hoffmann. Johann was the kind and loving father of Rosemary Pasternack (Stephen), Rita Bilas (Roger), Caroline Malloy (Timothy), Michael Hoffmann (deceased), and Sylvia Potter (John). He was the proud grandfather of Adam Pasternack (Sarah), Andrew Pasternack (Jamaila), Matthew Pasternack (Molly), Mark Pasternack (Nicole); Scott, Emily, and Gregory Bilas; Anna Probel (Thomas); Patrick, Brian, Kevin, and Michael Malloy; Ethan, Julia, and Mason Potter; dear great-grandfather of 12; beloved brother of Mary Friedrich, Veronica Gatto, and the late Kristine Jankovic, Josef Hoffmann, Friedrich Hoffmann, and Johanna Hetzel; admired uncle of many. 

Johann immigrated to the United States when he was 16 years old. He became a tool-and-die maker and was a founder and owner of Lunar Tool & Mold where he worked for many years. Johann was a long-standing parishioner at St. Bernadette Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family, nature, animals, polka music and activities at the Donauschwaben German-American Cultural Center. His hobbies included fishing, gardening, birdwatching, reading magazines and newspapers, and completing jigsaw puzzles.  

Upon his retirement, Johann spent much of his time volunteering at Lakewood Hospital. It was there he was given the endearing nickname “Candyman” for generously passing out candy to the hospital staff in the hope of brightening their days.  

Grateful to medical personnel for saving his life on several occasions, Johann donated his body to the Department of Anatomy at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine for education and research.  

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 11 AM at St. Bernadette Church, 2256 Clague Rd., Westlake, Ohio 44145. Luncheon to follow in Dempsey Hall.  

Memorial donations in honor of Johann may be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School at or American Heart Association at
