Birthplace: South Bend, Indiana Resided In: Avon, Ohio Service: July 01, 2020 Cemetery: Holy Cross Cemetery

Mary Sue Companey (Nee Guthrie), proud mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to many, passed away on June 22 at age 90. Beloved wife of Roy T. Companey (deceased), sister to Benita Anne Considine (deceased) and John Merlin (deceased), dear mother of Tim (Julie), John (Sandy), Mary Kurcsak (Tom), Anne Shugrue, Meg Carney (Mark), Denis Lowe (Mike), Sarah Masterson (Mike) and the late J.C. Companey. Loving grandmother of 21 and great grandmother of 16. Mary Sue was born to Mary Benita (Murphy) and John Merlin Guthrie on March 10, 1930.  In 1948, she graduated from Saint Joseph High School in South Bend, Indiana. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary’s College Notre Dame four years later, and became a buyer for Higbee’s, which brought her to Cleveland, where she met her husband, Roy.  She and Roy started their family in 1956, which put her Higbee career on hold while she tended to the Companey clan. It paid off, too, as her children referred to her as “The Best Mom in the Whole Wide World” daily.  Throughout her life, Mary Sue was actively involved in Meals on Wheels, St. Angela Merici Parish and later Holy Spirit Parish. Her favorite hobbies included sewing, reading and baking… her children and grandchildren could never get enough of her famous Scotcharoos. Mary Sue’s selflessness impacted everyone who met her. She lived her faith by serving her family, parish and community.  Mass of Christian burial to be held Wednesday, July 1 at 11 a.m. at Holy Spirit Church 410 Lear Rd. Avon Lake, Ohio. (Masks are required and social distancing will be observed) Private burial at Holy Cross Cemetery for family. Due to COVID-19, we will not be able to gather afterward. We thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.  In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve PO Box 72101, Cleveland, OH 44192.

Dear Tim, John, Mary, Anne, Meg, Denis and Sarah,
I want to express to you my condolences on receiving the news of the death of your mom. Mary Sue was a great witness of faith as a wife, mother and friend to many. Your mom and dad were a great help to me when I served at St. Angela’s. Be assured of my prayers for all of you and I will celebrate a mass for your mom and dad on July 1 at the Maryknoll house here in Rome.
